Alienware 13 (2016): portability for gamers

{title}

Because of its size, along with the smaller gaming laptop, a highly mobile device, the Alienware 13 was one of the most popular gaming laptops of 2015. You have to add to its thinness and lightness (in comparison with competing models) the great efficiency of its dedicated graphics card with the power of a desktop GPU (although it was offered with a graphics amplifier that was sold separately).

His screen of 3, 200x1, 800 pixels, however, was the subject of some controversy, because the performance of the computer did not seem to live up to that resolution, and did not respond at all to games of that graphic caliber. In addition to devouring resources and a valuable battery charge.

In the last edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), held in Las Vegas last January, Alienware arrived with all the intention of taking the bull by the horns, and showed a new model with a new, more efficient and decidedly revolutionary screen.

We do not exaggerate by saying that the Alienwar 13 (2016) could be the model that will revolutionize the screens for notebooks for gamers, with an addition that improves graphic performance and even enhances the execution of heavier games.

The OLED display as a new standard

In this case the Alienware offers a screen that is an OLED panel - the same class that is used in televisions and the best smartphone screens - and we must say that the change has been impressive, with a sample of intense vivid colors and Deep blacks in all kinds of graphics, whether photos, videos or latest generation games.

And not only that: it also makes games run more smoothly, as the OLED screen refreshes its pixels very quickly, reducing the flicker that usually ruins the most intense games, thanks to this OLED technology that eliminates the need for a light background, which can often flatten the image and make it less faithful.

The company ensures that the screen can be reloaded in just 1 to 2 milliseconds (a traditional screen does it in 16 milliseconds), which makes the graphics sequences, perspective changes and game loading shorter and more fluid processes .

And that's not all: screens that use OLED technology can offer a wider viewing angle and a brighter image, while using much less energy than an LCD monitor. A very good news for energy management.

Another good news coupled to this Alienware 13 is that its screen will not become more expensive and will cost more or less the same as the previous model. It should be noted, however, that the change to OLED implies a loss of resolution, as it goes from 3, 200 x 1, 800 of the previous Alienware LCD screen to only 2, 560x1, 440 in the OLED of this new model.

Processor and GPU

To support this screen and the performance that new generations of games require, the Alienware comes with the sixth generation of Intel processors: Skylake.

Due to its size, the Alienware 13 can only count a GTX 960M as a graphics card. With it, you can run games at 1080p, which would make (on a normal screen) that the games above this requirement look pale or poorly defined. Instead, thanks to the OLED screen it will provide an illusion of depth and stunning colors.

One of the problems not solved by Dell (owner of the Alienware subsidiary for some years) is that this laptop is still offered with an external graphics amplifier, which makes the benefit of an OLED screen somewhat precarious. If the idea was to lighten the team while offering a better response to the graphics (with a sacrifice of resolution, let's not forget it), it would have been a smart way to improve performance with a definitive and more efficient GPU, instead of offering a complement.

Design and construction

Its rigid housing is made of carbon fiber, a material that dissipates heat. It is accompanied by a special filler that supports this thermal dissipation to keep the hardware at a controlled temperature, even in the most intensive use.
When it comes to its design, the Alienware 13 will arrive with a new red cover, elegant and resistant. It should be mentioned that the equipment is still heavy (more than two kilos of pure harrware) and bulky (with a thickness of almost three centimeters).

The smallest laptop for gamers has an attractive system, with a good keyboard and an efficient and responsive touchpd, which will allow you to forget the mouse. In both cases, a premium design is enjoyed. The reinforced metal keyboard provides a premium experience with uniform feedback through each of its AlienFX backlit keys.

Operating system

It will be sold again with the Windows 10 OS, and its most recognized features for gamers. DirectX 12 for graphics improvement with a higher number of SPF and richer graphics, as well as a reduction in energy consumption. An Xbox application to play in online community. The DVR1 application that allows you to record games. An integrated support for Xbox 2 and Xbox control to stream games to a Windows 10 PC, laptop or equivalent tablet.

conclusion

The inclusion of all new technology that makes the equipment more efficient is not enthusiastic, especially if (as an Alienware entity) it does not raise the cost of the device . We believe that OLED screens in gaming equipment will set a new trend, and should become the new standard that makes graphics for more fluid and lighter games. Of course: we do not welcome the need for an external GPU, no matter how good the screen is.
