We are all aware of the importance that IP addresses have in the performance of any equipment that connects to the network since this address is the identifier of the team in this world called networking.

If we are new users in Mac environments or maybe we have experience but we do not know how to modify the IP address in macOS Sierra today we will teach how to modify it in a simple and practical way but maybe some ask why change the IP address of the computer?

Reasons to change IP address Mac

  • Administrative tests
  • Network Renewal
  • Device level failures
  • Connectivity
  • Prevent attacks from other users

Remember that if we handle an environment with IP addresses that are managed by the DHCP server, it is advisable to talk to the network administrator since establishing an IP by ourselves causes errors in the connectivity of the equipment.

1. Modify the IP address using System Preferences

Step 1
The first thing we should do is access the System Preferences. To access System Preferences we can use two methods:
  • Use the icon located in the Dock at the bottom
  • Go to Apple menu / System Preferences
There we will see the following window:

Another option that we have from this route is in the TCP / IP tab is to select the “Renew DHCP grant” button so that the IP of our equipment is renewed directly by the router.

2. Modify the IP address using a proxy server

Step 1
Remember that a proxy server is one that serves as an intermediary between two or more computers. We can set a new address using a proxy server in macOS Sierra using the following method:

System Preferences / Network / Proxies

Step 2
In this window, if we are not sure which protocol we should use, we can select the SOCKS Proxy option since this method is used to route network packets between clients and servers using a proxy. Select this option and enter the IP address in the “SOCKS proxy server” field

Click OK to save the changes and set the new IP address for macOS Sierra.

Using any of these methods we can, in a simple way, establish a new IP address to our macOS Sierra equipment but remember that this is only in cases where such change is really necessary since otherwise we can affect the connectivity of the equipment to the network .
