Many of us like to customize our operating system in multiple ways, whether at the level of themes, sounds, cursors, among others. One of the most interesting ways we can customize our operating system is by changing the appearance of its sources in order to have a much broader and more striking visual impact.
Although it is a simple process to have multiple sources in the operating system, except for the default sources, it can cause performance problems of the equipment regardless of the operating system we use, call it Linux, Windows or Mac OS, as various processes are increased and services associated with these sources.
It is recommended that we install only the sources that we consider will be required and not have abundant sources that will not be used at any time.
Modify fonts in Windows 10
To install one or more fonts in Windows 10 we can search the network for various types of fonts but these must be exclusively of the following type:
- OpenType (.otf)
- PostScript Type 1 (.pfb + .pfm)
- TrueType (.ttf) or TrueType Collection (.ttc)
With this type of Source we can modify the appearance of our Operating System and to install them just right click on the source and select the Install option
In case the downloaded sources are in a compressed file, it is enough to extract the sources to a defined location and from there proceed with the installation. We can visualize the sources that we have available in Windows 10 accessing the following route.

From this window we can perform various tasks on the sources, among these:
Preview the selected source
Simply select the source and click on the Preview option and we will see how our system would look with that source
Remove a font in Windows 10
Another option available is to remove any of the preinstalled sources or remove any that we have installed, for this we select the source and click on the option Delete or right click on the source and select the option Delete
This way we can include or delete a font in Windows 10 in a simple way. We can also change the font that comes by default in Windows. In addition you also have the possibility to put the Mac source.
Modify fonts in macOS Sierra
To install new fonts in macOS Sierra we can search the network for sources of the following type:
- OpenType (.otf)
- TrueType (.ttf)
- Datafork TrueType Suitcase (.dfont)
We can also access the Font Book application where we find more than 300 fonts for system modification. We can enter the term Font in Spotlight and there select the respective option.
If we want to add a new font to the Font Book, it will be necessary to click on the + icon located at the top and in the window that will open the route where we have the new fonts:
There we click Open for the source to be added. If we want to remove any source from macOS Sierra, just right-click on the source and select the option Delete family “Name_Letter”. This way we can add or remove fonts in macOS Sierra.

To install a new source in one of the Linux ditros, in this case Debian 8, we must download it from the web taking into account the following types of sources:
- TrueType (.ttf)
- PostScript Type 1 (.pfb + .pfm)
- OpenType (.otf)
We can install one or more fonts by copying that font to the Fonts folder or by clicking on the Install option. Once the source has been copied to the Sources folder we must access the terminal and enter the following command:

As we can see, we have some options to modify the appearance of our operating systems in a simple and dynamic way.
